Having said that, I wanted to do something special for them at the wedding. I decided to add another song to the wedding about month before. I was planning on having my aunt and cousin sing "The Prayer" after we said our vows, but due to some scheduling conflicts, my aunt couldn't be there. I was pretty sad about this, but it actually made me feel better about adding a song. :) I wanted Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me." This song says everything perfectly about how they raised me and loved me my entire life. Now, the hard part was finding someone with a big enough voice to pull it off. It didn't take me long to realize my friend, Nicole, could do it! And, did she ever!!! She was AMAZING!
I also had something else planned. Right before my dad and I walked down the aisle, I gave him a handkerchief. When I was little, I called them "hankies". He ALWAYS had one! I even used to give him packages of these for Christmas. I remember he would hand his to me in church when I was little and had a cold. "Hankies" are my dad! I couldn't think of a better gift. Along with the "hankie", I gave him a boutineer. Since he didn't already have one, this was a way he stood out and had something that identified him to me. His boutineer was made of white hydrangeas, just like my bouquet.
As we walked down the aisle. I carried a handkerchief for my mom as well. She had no idea it was coming! I told my dad that I needed to stop when we got to her. Along with the handkerchief, I had a bouquet of flowers that would also identify my mom with me. It was made of white hydrangeas, as well.
I love that I could do something that was a surprise to both of them! It was so fun keeping it a secret. I had Lindi, from the Bridal Garden, make the bouquet and boutineer. My parents never saw the invoice for it b/c I worked with her on the programs and that was it....or so they thought! I had her deliver the flowers to the church early on Saturday so they would never know...and she even put them in a box with "for the bride's eyes only" on it!!! haha! I loved it! I did think I was going to get caught. I thought my mom was already in place to be walked down the aisle. I thought it was safe to give my dad his boutineer. Apparently not. My mom was still running around like a crazy lady while the family was being seated. She was stressing me OUT! I was afraid she was going to come back where we were and ruin the whole thing. Thankfully, she didn't! It all worked out perfectly. :)
I also hid the programs from them. I had a "thank you" written to them, plus they had NO idea that Nicole was singing a song to them.
